How Does a Personal Shopper Work? Advice from Swish Alice, a Personal Stylist in Bournemouth
If the thought of spending a Saturday wandering from shop to shop, trying on endless clothes and still coming home with nothing quite right sounds familiar, you're certainly not alone.
Shopping should feel inspiring. But with so much choice — different brands, trends, fits and price points — it can quickly become overwhelming.
Perhaps you know your wardrobe needs something, but you're not quite sure what. Maybe you keep buying pieces that look lovely in the shop but never get worn once you get them home. Or perhaps you simply don't have the time or inclination to search through hundreds of options to find the few pieces that genuinely work for you.
That's where a personal shopping service can help.
As a personal stylist offering personal shopping in Bournemouth and Dorset, my approach isn't about encouraging you to buy more clothes. It's about taking away the overwhelm, understanding what you actually need and helping you make better, more considered choices.
What does a personal shopper do?
A personal shopper helps you find clothes and accessories based on your individual needs, rather than leaving you to navigate the high street alone.
But for me, good personal shopping starts long before we enter a shop. I want to understand your lifestyle, your personal style, your colouring and body shape, what you already own and — most importantly — what you're actually missing.
From there, I can research and pre-select pieces specifically for you, so that our shopping time is focused on trying considered options rather than endlessly browsing.
Professional personal shoppers commonly research and select products based on clients' preferences, needs and budgets; independent fashion-focused services can also help with style, fit and specific occasions.
Who is personal shopping for?
You don't need to dislike shopping to benefit from working with a personal shopper.
Many of my clients enjoy clothes and fashion. What they don't enjoy is wasting time and money on pieces that don't work.
Personal shopping can be particularly useful if:
You feel overwhelmed by choice
You walk into a shop or start scrolling online and simply don't know where to begin.
You keep buying clothes you don't wear
Something catches your eye, you buy it, take it home... and somehow it never quite makes it into an outfit.
Your body or lifestyle has changed
The brands, shapes or styles you relied on in the past may no longer feel right for the woman you are today.
You know there are gaps in your wardrobe
Perhaps you've completed a Wardrobe Edit and know exactly what's missing — but don't have the time or confidence to find it.
You're shopping for something specific
A wedding, holiday, new job, return to work or special occasion can suddenly create a very specific shopping brief.
Personal shopping can be particularly useful for busy clients, people feeling stuck with their personal style and those searching for outfits for specific occasions.
What happens before a personal shopping session?
This is perhaps the part people don't expect. We don't simply meet at the shops and start looking. The preparation beforehand is what makes the experience personal.
Getting to know you
If you're new to Swish Alice, we'll start with a pre-consultation and personal profile.
I want to understand your style, lifestyle and existing wardrobe, as well as what you'd like to achieve from our time together.
We'll also discuss your budget. Personal shopping should work within what you're comfortable spending — there's little point in me showing you beautiful clothes that aren't realistic for you.
Creating your shopping strategy
Next, we'll establish what we're actually looking for.
Perhaps you need versatile pieces that will unlock more of your existing wardrobe. Maybe there's a particular gap we've identified. Or perhaps we're creating a complete look for an upcoming occasion.
Having a clear brief prevents shopping from becoming aimless.
Research and pre-selection
Ahead of our appointment, I'll research and pre-select pieces from carefully chosen retailers.
This means I've already done much of the searching before you arrive.
Instead of spending our session wandering around hoping something catches our eye, we can focus our time on trying pieces that have been selected with you in mind.
What happens during a personal shopping session?
This is where we bring everything together.
We'll try the pieces I've selected and look at how they work on you — considering colour, fit, proportion, comfort and personal style.
But something being flattering isn't enough.
We'll also ask:
Does it feel like you?
Does it work for your actual lifestyle?
Can you wear it with pieces you already own?
Can we style it in more than one way?
Do you genuinely love it?
If the answer is no, it doesn't need to come home with you.
The aim isn't to leave carrying as many bags as possible. It's to leave feeling confident about the pieces you've chosen.
Do I have to buy everything my personal shopper chooses?
Absolutely not. The pieces I pre-select are there to give us a thoughtful starting point. Some will work beautifully. Some may lead us towards something slightly different. And occasionally something that looked perfect on paper simply won't feel right when you put it on. That's all part of the process.
There should never be pressure to buy something simply because I've selected it. Every piece should earn its place in your wardrobe.
Is personal shopping only for designer clothes?
No. This is another misconception I'd love to put to bed. Personal shopping isn't reserved for luxury boutiques or enormous clothing budgets. The right shopping strategy should be based on your budget, lifestyle and priorities.
There may be certain pieces where investing a little more makes sense because you'll wear them constantly. In other areas, the high street can be absolutely brilliant.
It's about knowing where your money is best spent — not buying the most expensive option.
Can a personal shopper help with a special occasion or holiday?
Yes. Sometimes you don't need to rethink your entire wardrobe. You simply need help finding something specific.
Perhaps you have a wedding coming up and nothing feels right. You're planning a holiday and need a few pieces that work together. You're returning to work and need to refresh your workwear. Or there's one frustrating gap in your wardrobe that you've been trying to fill for months.
That's why I also offer a Focused Shop — a shorter, targeted personal shopping experience for those occasions when you know what you need but would like expert help finding it.
What's the difference between a personal shopper and a personal stylist?
The terms often overlap, but there can be an important difference. Personal shopping focuses primarily on finding and buying the right new pieces.
Personal styling looks at the bigger picture: understanding your colours, body shape, personal style, lifestyle and existing wardrobe before deciding what — if anything — needs to be added.
For me, the two naturally work together.
I don't want to help you buy a beautiful jacket in isolation. I want to know that jacket works with your colouring, suits your proportions, feels like you and can be worn with several things already hanging in your wardrobe.
That's why the Swish approach follows a simple philosophy:
Discover what suits you.
Make more of what you own.
Then fill the gaps thoughtfully.
Is hiring a personal shopper worth it?
That depends on what you're hoping to achieve. If you love browsing, rarely make shopping mistakes and have plenty of time to find what you need, you may not need one.
But if you regularly spend money on clothes you don't wear, find shopping stressful, struggle to find things that suit you or simply don't have time to search, professional help can make the process considerably easier.
The value isn't just in the shopping session itself.
It's in making fewer mistakes.
It's knowing why something works before you buy it.
It's finding pieces that create several outfits rather than one.
And hopefully, it's opening your wardrobe afterwards and actually wanting to wear what you've bought.
Personal shopping isn't about buying more
At Swish Alice, this is really important to me. I don't believe a great wardrobe is created by continually adding more clothes. A great wardrobe is one where the pieces work together, suit your life and make getting dressed feel easier.
Sometimes you need something new. Sometimes the answer is already sitting in your wardrobe.
Personal shopping comes into the picture when we've identified that something is genuinely missing. It's not about buying more. It's about buying better.
